THERE are proposals to instal speed cushions in Crossgates to slow down traffic coming into the village.

Fife Council has decided traffic calming is needed on Inverkeithing Road, from just north of Muir Court to Thistle Court.

A speed survey in that area showed less than half of the vehicles stuck to the speed limit.

Earlier this month, council officials met with Crossgates Community Council to finalise what traffic calming would be appropriate for one of the village’s busiest roads.

Cowdenbeath Area Committee heard there have long been concerns about the speed of vehicles on Inverkeithing Road.

Councillors were told that over the past five years traffic calming measures involving large 30mph signs and ‘dragon’s teeth’ road markings had been used and no injury accidents reported.

However, the council's roads and transportation department’s Scott Blyth, had said at a meeting in the community centre that a speed survey had revealed there was still "poor speed compliance".

He said: “Northbound, there is only 42 per cent of traffic adhering to the speed limit and southbound the figure is 38 per cent and a third of all traffic is doing more than 40.

“It is proposed that speed cushions be implemented opposite Humbug Park and opposite the entrance to Thistle Court.”

Local councillor Alistair Bain had said: “I think if we had cushions appropriately placed these would work effectively and I think there should be some beyond Thistle Court.”
