VANDALISM to a valuable Benarty leisure asset has been slammed this week by a local councillor.

On Saturday night King George V Park, in Crosshill, was ruined by someone driving a car recklessly over the park and surrounding areas.

The Benarty Astros Football Club use the facility and are currently looking forward to getting a new pavilion.

But Saturday night's happenings has come as a major set-back with the damage caused to the pitch rendering it unusable.

Astros secretary, Kerry Duff, said this week: "We as a club have worked in conjunction with Fife Council to maintain the football park to make the park safe for the use of our kids.

"Fife Council provided us with eight tonnes of soil three weeks ago and two of our coaches took on the job of filling in all the pitch lines as they were getting deep and causing a hazard, they then put grass seed down, with the intent that we would then line the pitch our self.

"We are 100% committed to maintaining the park to a high standard for the safety of the local kids, However, our efforts are continually wasted by the people using the park to drive cars, quad bikes, play golf and also dog fouling.

"This is not the first time this has happened, we have had to phone the police several times regarding these issues.

"We were allocated £150k from Fife Council for a new pavilion at King George V Park and this money has been put together with money raised by Ballingry Golf Club and Fife Council, to build a joint Golf/Football pavilion. But this pavilion will be of no use to us if we are unable to use the park due to vandalism".

Kerry added: "As a club feel that a gate is required to the main entrance of the park and also there are another three entrances to the park which need reviewed.

"Not only do kids use the football pitch, but there is a kids play park in King George V Park and the safety of kids playing at the park is also in jeopardy, due to cars speeding into the park and quad bikes using the park as an obstacle course".

But thanks to social media the club has some video evidence which could help police trace the culprit.

Meanwhile Lochs councillor Alex Campbell said that this was a 'disgraceful reckless act' carried out by someone who was clearly not interested in their local community.

He said: "The Astros have three young teams who use this pitch but thanks to the efforts of this reckless individual they are struggling to find a ground to play their games at on November 5.

"What does this person get out of churning up a pitch which has hours spent on it by the club committee making it an excellent facility for youth football?

"If anyone has information on who carried out this act I hope they would contact the police on 101."
