THERE was a special match of the day at Central Park on Saturday when Lisa Jayne Dunderdale and Jon Turner married before Cowdenbeath’s Lowland League game with Gretna 2008.

The couple are from Yorkshire and met through rugby league, while Jon’s love of the Blue Brazil coming through attending stock car meetings after watching Cowden in action before the Racewall action got underway on Saturdays.

Jon actually proposed to Lisa at the away match at Berwick Rangers, back in September, so what better than getting married before the last home match of the season against Gretna?

The wedding ceremony took place on the pitch at 11am, and then the reception went on throughout the rest of the day in the Andy Matthew Lounge.

Central Fife Times:

And as the teams came out on Saturday, Cowden captain Robbie McNab, and his Gretna counterpart, Robbie Ivison, greeted the couple pitch-side.

Jon explained how the Cowden connection developed.

“I used to attend a lot of Bradford Park Avenue games and I was friendly with a lorry driver, Peter Hearn, who was a massive stock car fan," he said. "He used to go to Cowdenbeath home games before stock car meetings and he became very friendly with then chairman Gordon McDougall.

“Peter persuaded me to go to a game against Queen’s Park at the end of the 1999-2000 season, which saw the Spiders win the Division 2 title by pipping Cowden 3-2 on the day.

“I enjoyed myself so much that day, that my love affair with the Blue Brazil started.”

He has seen more than 100 Cowden games over the years, including many away matches.

Lisa picked up the story: “At South Leeds Stadium, where Hunslet RFC played, I worked helping out in the hospitality department and that is where I met Jon.

“After taking in a game, Jon asked me if I would like to go for a drink the following Monday - and that was how everything really got started.”
