THE hullabaloo about the speeding of cars on Gagarin Way in Lumphinnans is something that has to be worrying for people of the village.

The natural slope down the street has been something which has, as a letter writer suggested, encouraged extra speed from vehicles of all sorts, but certainly nothing that should lead to motors exceeding 40mph.

Drivers doing speeds of between 40 and 50 are simply breaking the law and totally wrong.

The sports hub was always going to see this important stretch of road in the village get busier and busier and it is a really magnificent facility with grass and astro pitches.

Undoubtedly when there are matches on both pitches there is going to be congestion problems but certainly there is no excuse for driving too fast whether it be down the slope or up it.

Training nights will also be busy but the story is the same the speed limit should be adhered to.

I joined the community council members in Gagarin Way one Thursday night and was shocked to see cars racing down street.

The thing was there was no training going on at the astro although a side was operating on the grass, so there was not a lot of 'sport' traffic but still we saw several cars going to fast down Gagarin Way.

Clearly at least a few of these had to be driven by Lumphinnans people so they should have known better.

But if local people are ignoring the pleas from the village then that is something which is abhorrent.

The big worry is that a child could be seriously hurt by speeders or even worse and that is something that should be avoided at all cost.

The community council is set to take its case to the Cowdenbeath Area Committee and I am pretty sure they will get plenty backing there.

And if they can go there with a petition containing more than 100 names then that will surely seal their case.
