WINS for Kelty Hearts and Hill of Beath Hawthorn on Saturday have them sitting in the top two places in the East Super League.

In the South Division Lochgelly Albert and Crossgates Primrose both drew while there were reverses for Dundonald Bluebell and Lochore Welfare.

Fauldhouse United 1,

Kelty Hearts 3.

BOTTOM club Fauldhouse made life hard for Kelty in West Lothian but after a shock start the league leaders took over.

Hearts had to ring the changes with several injuries from the busy programme of the opening three weeks of the campaign keeping players out, and it was United who opened the game well and they grabbed the lead in ten minutes with a good finish as the visiting defence got caught out.

Kelty gradually started to take charge of the game with Nelly McCabe and Stephen Husband working hard in midfield and the equaliser came when Brian Ritchie converted from close in with 16 minutes on the clock.

Fauldhouse were working hard but when Craig Thomson struck to put the visitors ahead that put pressure on the hosts.

Scott Dalziel and Stuart Cargill both came close to extending the lead and in the second-half it was Hearts who looked the likelier side to score.

They needed a third goal to tie up the points and it came from Nelly McCabe who fired home to give Kelty 15 points from five games and top spot five points clear of Haws.

Hill of Beath Hawthorn 3,

Newtongrange Star 0.

HAWS got back into second top spot in the Super League with this win over a hardworking Star side at Keir’s Park.

The opening 45 minutes saw the big strong Newtongrange side pose problems for Hill of Beath and they put the home side under quite a bit of pressure at times.

Haws defended well though and Ryan Adamson was not overworked between the home sticks and Calum Adamson almost broke the deadlock with a crisp shot after cutting in from the right hand side which the ‘keeper held at the second attempt.

With the game goalless at the break Haws opened the second period well and they scored inside 60 seconds when a short pass-back was latched on to by Craig McGuire and after the ‘keeper blocked his first effort he rolled in the rebound.

Twenty minutes later the home side extended their lead when Adamson beat two defenders and then sent his cut-back into the box where a defender turned the ball past his own ‘keeper.

Star went out for the goal they needed to get back into the game but the Haws defence stood firm

And with eight minutes left Hill of Beath got number three when Scott McCrindle raced on to a good pass and chipped the ‘keeper.

Haws boss Bobby Wilson was full of praise for the way his team tackled a difficult game: “We had to graft really hard for the points because Newtongrange are a big strong side but we defended really well in the first-half and created some good chances in the second.

“Every one of our players put in a hard shift and were rewarded with a good win.”

Dundonald Bluebell 2,

Penicuik Athletic 5.

A DISAPPOINTING day for Bluebell who lost their second successive home Super League game.

The East Lothian side started the game well and took the lead in only two minutes and despite Dundonald working hard they lost a second goal to a header in 33 minutes.

Dundonald started to come strongly back into the picture and they pulled one back through a Paul Quinn finish nine minutes into the second-half.

And when leading scorer Scott Lawrie's free-kick equalised it looked like ‘game on’ and for a spell it looked like the Moorsiders could grab all three points.

But in a late fade the home side saw Penicuik take the lead and try as they might they lost two more goals and lost by a convincing margin.

Things were made worse for the home when Lawrie sustained a bad leg knock.

Kirkcaldy YM 1,

Lochgelly Albert 1.

THE Albert were knocked off the top of the South Division and now lie fourth after this lacklustre show at Kirkcaldy.

The opening stages saw the Berts dominate possession but they were unable to work the YM ‘keeper.

The home side were not posing lot of danger but in 18 minutes they grabbed the lead and Lochgelly, for the first time this league season, were behind.

The travelling fans were expecting a big response from their favourites but saw only one shot on target before the break.

The second period saw Albert have almost total monopoly of the ball but there were no goals and the longer the game went a shock defeat looked a possible result.

Then with nine minutes left Albert won a free-kick on the edge of the YM box and Martin Rennie curled in the equaliser.

There was more Lochgelly pressure in the closing minutes but no goals and it was two points dropped allowing Blackburn United, Dunbar and Pumpherston to go ahead of them.

Oakley United 3,

Crossgates Primrose 3.

THIS was a thriller with defences struggling to cope with two lively forward lines in this South Division derby at Blairwood Park.

Crossgates made the better start to the game and Stephen Stark put them ahead in only nine minutes.

However, Oakley did not panic and they started to create chances but the Primrose back line survived to the break.

Stuart Donaldson then put Crossgates two up after the break but Oakley came back to reduce the deficit.

This was turning into a really good game and Oakley were dangerous and they levelled the game and soon after went in front.

However, Crossgates finished the game strongly and a fine goal from Donaldson earned a point which has Primrose bang in the middle of the table with a last minute strike.

Lochore Welfare 0,

Kinnoull 5.

THE young Lochore side came back bravely into this North Division fixture after trailing at the break by three goals.

The game opened with strong going Kinnoull dominating things and they took the lead.

Lochore were not really posing Kinnoull a lot of problems and the Perthshire side struck again to double their advantage.

A third goal before the break had Welfare really struggling but a change of shape at the interval saw them come into the picture and they were knocking on the Kinnoull door but they needed a goal.

There were half chances but a goal would not come and then the visitors were awarded a rather soft penalty which was converted to put the visitors out of sight.

Lochore’s Liam Gray hit the bar but a fifth goal from a Kinnoull player in what looked like an off-side position saw the visitors win well.

Welfare boss Andy Healey was disappointed with his team’s first-half performance: “We did not compete well enough in the first-half and it gave them a grip of the game.

“We changed things a bit after the break and had a lot more of the game but the penalty was a killer blow.”
